WHAT IS A SLEEP STUDY?

A sleep study or polysomnography is the overnight measurement of your bodily functions. These include breathing, snoring, Oxygen saturation, EKG, and brain activity during sleep.

WHEN DOES ONE NEED A SLEEP STUDY?

  1. Sleep Apnea
  2. Recording of sleep-related movements such as sleepwalking, sleep talking, sleep terrors, nighttime seizures, dream enacting behavior, etc.
  3. Narcolepsy

THERE ARE 4 TYPES OF SLEEP STUDY

SLEEP STUDY — TYPE I

Sleep studies are conducted in a hospital/clinic under the supervision of a sleep technician.

It has a minimum of 8 channels:

  • EEG (brain activity)
  • EOG (Eye Activity)
  • ECG / Heart Rate (Cardiac activity)
  • Chin EMG (muscle activity)
  • Limb EMG (Legs muscle activity)
  • Respiratory effort (thorax and abdomen movement)
  • Air Flow (breathing)
  • Pulse oximetry (Oxygen desaturation and pulse)
  • Snoring
  • Body Position

SLEEP STUDY — TYPE II

Sleep studies are conducted at home. Data recorded is the same as in Type I.

SLEEP STUDY — TYPE III

Device screens a person to establish the existence of the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Test.

  • Airflow
  • Pulse Oximetry (oxygen desaturation and pulse)
  • Effort band (respiratory effort)

SLEEP STUDY — TYPE IV

Device screens a person to establish the existence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

It has only 1 or 2 channels:

  • Pulse Oximetry (oxygen desaturation and pulse)
  • Effort band (respiratory effort)

WHAT TREATMENT DO I NEED TO TAKE IF MY RESULT ARE POSITIVE FOR OSA?

Treatment usually involves Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy which is the most effective therapy available for OSA. In addition, weight loss, regular physical exercise, stoppage of smoking, and drinking alcohol are also advocated as adjunctive Behavioural measures.
